On Any Sunday – A Night With Malcolm Smith

An evening with Malcolm Smith watching On Any Sunday
by Tim Kuglin – MotoZaniaMotoZania February 25, 2010

In August of 1971 I had not quite yet reached by thirteenth birthday, but it was already my fifth summer riding motorcycles. My good friends Dale, Norman and Ron all had motorcycles too and we could almost always be found at the scramble track.

Things were a bit simpler then and Friday nights in Great Falls meant going to either Pete’s or the A&W where Car Hops (girls on roller skates for you young uns) would bring the food to our car and hang it on a window tray. My father would hand out the meals and believe it or not, this was fun for us.

Typical summer nights in Montana were hot and dry. So after Friday dinner, we were off to the Twilight Drive-In for a movie. Loaded into our 1966 Chevrolet BelAir station wagon my parents were up front. My best friend Dale and I were in the back seat and my siblings Mark, Stacie and Eric were all in the rear section of the car. With the speaker hanging on my fathers car window, the dancing hot dogs on the giant screen were done singing “Let’s All Go To the Lobby”, the film began.

My mother was excited as the star of the movie was Steve McQueen. My father seemed happy just to not be swinging a hammer. The kids were occupied in their sleeping bags in the back. The opening scene started with a kid who was Dale’s and my age doing a block long wheelie on his banana seat stingray with ape hangers, so of course we were spell bound right from the start. The film was, Bruce Brown’s epitome of motorcycle riding in the early ’70’s, On Any Sunday, starring Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen.

The movie literally, changed our lives. Take into count that forty years ago, there was almost no TV coverage of any motorcycle events, except some of Evel Knievel and a little tiny bit on Wide World of Sports. The only people we could learn riding techniques from were older riders on our scramble track. Now, here we were watching ISDT World Champion Malcolm Smith ride. I am sure several cars away people could see the light bulbs go on over Dale and my heads as we watched and learned that standing on the pegs will make you go faster!

Let me give you a quick history on Malcolm Smith. The International Six Day Trials is the Olympics of motorcycling. It is a timed event that is by invitation only. Malcolm was the first American to ever be invited to ride in the ISDT. He took home 8 Gold Medals from the event between 1966 and 1976. Malcolm has also won the Baja 1000 six times, the Baja 500 four times and the Mint 400 twice.

Last night it was my honor and privilege to be one of a hundred invited guests to be part of a special screening of On Any Sunday at Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, California. Malcolm was on hand to make comments and take questions during the film. Supercross announcer Larry Naston was the Master of Ceremonies and Malcolm’s children Ashley and Alexander help put on the show.

Malcolm was already a very accomplished racer when filming of On Any Sunday was to start. He knew Bruce Brown and Steve McQueen from working on their motorcycles. That work turned into a friendship that made the three of them along with AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill all riding buddies. Making the movie made Malcolm a star on screen to go along with his racing achievements.

On Any Sunday has several scenes on Malcolm Smith at the 1970 ISDT in Escorial, Spain. He reflected last night and with me in a previous interview about his first experience at the International Six Day Trials in 1966. Up until then, Malcolm was only a local Southern California racer, albeit a very successful one. Edison Dye contacted Malcolm one day and asked him to try out a new Husqvarna motorcycle made to ride in the trials. At first Malcolm refused stating he was a Greeves man. But, Dye persisted and convinced Malcolm to get aboard. He took one lap around the track and told Dye that he had a rider.

A few days later, Malcolm Smith found himself in Norway (by mistake) on his way to the ISDT in Sweden. As Malcolm tells it, he had the keys to a VW microbus at the airport, but had no idea which one with several in the parking lot so he kept trying the keys in each one until the door finally opened. Since he did not speak Norwegian, or Swedish for that matter, he enlisted help along the way to the race. Hitchhiking was popular at the time and Malcolm made it a point to pick up pretty young Scandinavians along his route. He would drive them to where they wanted to go, all along getting closer to his destination.

Finally arriving at Orebro in Sweden, he was roomed at a hostel with his idol, Dave ‘Bud’ Ekins. Riding for Germany on a Zundapp, Bud was already famous as a stunt rider for performing the fence jumping scene in the Steve McQueen’s movie The Great Escape. Smith said that Ekins was a ladies man. Coming from a guy who just told us he pick up girls all over Scandinavia, this point was well taken. Ekins would stay out until 3 or 4 in the morning and Smith would help sneak him back into the hostel. The races started at 6 AM and with only a couple hours rest, Bud Ekins went on to win the 1966 ISDT with Malcolm taking second.

His second place finish was disappointing to Malcolm, he likes to win. Since all his riding experience was in the California dirt, he had no idea of how to handle the moss covered rocks of Sweden. But in typical Malcolm Smith fashion, he over came and went on to win the following year in Poland.

On Any Sunday features several scenes from the Baja 1000. The first year of the famed race was in 1967. As he was working, Malcolm could not attend the course ride through. Instead, he memorized maps and a travel guide about the entire one thousand mile ride. At the finish, he was a half day ahead of the closest competitor. Malcolm went on to elaborate that the hardest part of the race was the ride home where their car broke down and they rode in the back of a truck filled with live turtles.

Steve McQueen under the guise of Harvey Mushman and Malcolm Smith also raced each other many times in the Elsinore Grand Prix. The first year of the race was in 1971 and was featured in On Any Sunday. The film shows Malcolm winning by landslide passing nearly every other rider, some of them three times. He commented that Steve McQueen was a racer who acted.

In one of the final film scenes, Mert Lawwell, Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen are all riding a “cow trail” together. McQueen tries to show up the two world champions and take the lead. He rides through a stream and both guys come along side of him and bury McQueen in a wall of water. It was unplanned and not staged. All Steve McQueen could say was “you bastards”.

Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside plans to have “Movie Night with the Greats” three more times this year. Proposed racers will be Jeff Ward, Jeremy McGrath and Roger DeCoster. Check on MotoZania social networkMotoZania social network for details.

Motorcycle Accessories

I should say here that before you are going to take their advice you must build a relationship based on mutual respect and trust. You may or may not like what they tell you but if you don’t trust them the whole exercise is worthless and you may end up feeling cheated even though the retailer has given the best advice he can.

My advice is to find out as much as you can about the motorcycle products you require before purchasing and despite the very fact that there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, it really is the best place to start and will not cost you a cent.

Try some simple searches This could be the first part of the process, the manufacturers and distributors are very proud of the motorcycle accessories/parts they make and or supply and provide as much information as they can about their various products on their websites.

If the information you are looking for cannot be found on the site, hit up the “contact us” page and email them. The care taken with the reply and time it takes to respond will give you a clear indication of how the company values your custom.

You must research as many brands as possible and take particular interest about how long the product is expected to last or remain serviceable, warranty period and after sales support.

Almost everyone only consider these important conditions after they have made the purchase which is of no use if your new accessory does not fit or fails 13 months later, and the company you purchased it from has gone broke or you need to send it half way across the world to be checked.

Now armed with information direct from the manufacturer about your potential new purchase you need to find out as much as you can from people who already own the same product and you guessed it the internet is the place to go, however this time our search must be more specific as the goal is to find a relevant “forum” that is or has been discussing the exact accessory you are interested in.

You will need to type in the name of the product, the brand and add in “review” and or “forum”. Check the results and again look for sites with active user forums and follow the link. Here is where you need to be very careful as some disgruntled consumers can be far from fair and you will need to read between the lines a bit and feel the “thread” as a whole, remembering that positive comments take a lot more effort to post than a negative one.

Generaly if the product is a good one other forum members will come to its defence, and you will quickly see how happy most owners of the particular part or accessory are.

The last thing that needs to be considered is the price. Whilst value is very important you do not often get value if you buy the cheapest product you can find.

Price can be something that is well forgotten about six months later.

Nevertheless you still need to ensure you are getting the best value. If you have already chosen the brand it is simple just find it at the best price you can get from a retailer you trust.

If you are still deciding between a few brands then price is a most important factor but do not forget quality after sales support is worth a lot more than a few $$ if you have a problem and if you pay more are you less likely to have a problem?

Take into account your options carefully and most of all how long you will need the product to work for as good durable quality motorcycle luggage and accessories will work as designed for a lifetime and all the other benefits from a more expensive product like better design and quality of finish come as a free bonus.

Government Ban On Biker Colors In Bars !

December 29, 2009 by L.J. James · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Motorcycle and Motorcycle Safety

There is a new law in Virginia that will ban Motorcycle Club Colors in Bars. The law, originally aimed at Street Gangs, is causing quite a stir with Virginia Bikers. The law states that Bar & Restaurant owners will lose their liquor license if they allow patrons who wear “gang” related attire such as Club Logo’s or Colored Bandannas.

These sort of “grey area” laws are extremely dangerous and a threat to everyone’s freedom. Who decides what constitutes “Gang Apparel”? I’m wondering if Boy Scouts are going to be able to eat together at Applebees if they are in their uniforms.

According to news reports, many Bikers and Motorcycle Club Members in Virginia have already begun fighting this law. If a law like this is allowed to stand in Virginia, it won’t be long until it is passed in other states across America!

We as Motorcyclists and Bikers (It does not matter what you call yourself) have to realize fast that we are all connected. It doesn’t matter what you ride, what State you live in or who you Support, we’re all in this together. What effects Me effects you and it doesn’t matter what you happen to think of me.

When the local Bar you and your Brothers love hanging out at is told that you and all other members of Motorcycle Clubs can no longer go there or they will revoke the Bars liquor license, What then?

This is no Joke my Biker Brothers, every month there is another new law that is aimed not only Motorcycle Club Members, but all Americans. It seems that every time the Government wants to take away a freedom, they find a way to craft a new law for our “safety”. What kind of Country is this turning into when you can’t wear what you want and suddenly, your constitutional right to assemble is taken away from you?

Although there are many ignorant people out there that believe Motorcycle Clubs are Gangs, that’s simply not the case. Most Motorcycle Clubs are made up of hard working, honest, law abiding, patriotic, American Citizens who enjoy a common bond, Motorcycles. It’s what is in a persons heart that determines who they are, not the clothes they wear.

In the past year the government has taken away the Colors of one Motorcycle Club. A law enforcement officer can demand anyone sporting the Clubs logo to forfeit it. The theory is that the loss of the logo strips the club of its “gang identity.”

Grant it, it appears that some of the Clubs members may have been involved in illegal activities, but that doesn’t mean that everyone who rides a Motorcycle should be punished for it. In fact, less than 10% of this 600 Member Club was even accused of wrong doing.

In addition, the Government and law enforcement agencies have been spending millions of our dollars to influence friends and ex-members of Motorcycle Clubs in an effort to infiltrate these clubs in hopes of catching members doing something illegal. Often, when they find that the Club they’ve infiltrated is nothing more than a group of Patriotic, Law Abiding Men & Women, they’ll fabric wrong doing so that they can justify the enormous amount of resources spent on these Fishing Expeditions.

Just imagine how much better off we’d all be if they used those resources to investigate the Corrupt Politicians, the Corporations that control our Country, Wall Street, and the other issues that are quickly sinking this great Nation.

What I want to know is, what will be the last straw? What’s it going to take for us to say enough is enough? We can not fight these Laws and Fight each other at the same time! We need to work together to save what we are, who we are.

The Government has taken away our rights to ride the Motorcycle we want, to wear what we want and now to go where we want! Why are we still fighting each other? When are we going to wake up??

Small Town Brawl!

It was a quite day in a small Bar in upstate New York . The girl working behind the bar was young, she had just turned Nineteen and had only been bar tending a few weeks, this was her first time working alone. Everything was going fine with only two of the regulars in the back shooting pool it was nothing she could not handle she thought to herself.

Then the front door opened and in walked ten of the biggest men she had ever seen. They talked loudly and as they walked over to the far side of the bar, She got a look at the back of their jackets. She could easily see that the markings on them where all the same. The men ordered pitchers of beer and their talking only got louder as they drank more and talked about things she did not understand. Then the men went quite as the front door opened and in walked seven more large men, at first she thought these seven men where with the first Ten as they looked and dressed similar but as she looked at the markings on the backs of these new comers Jackets she could tell while they where similar the markings where different, By the way the two groups where looking at each other she guessed the difference must mean a lot to them.

The Seven men sat up toward the front of the bar and also ordered pitchers of beer. The young girl did her best to make sure both groups where kept happy, but it was just a matter of time and Beer! When one of the men from the first group called out to her, “Hey Honey don’t worry about those guys, there losers! Come over here and hang with some real men.” That was all it took, the fuse was lit. “Who you calling losers pal we are good enough to beat you any day of the week!” Yelled back a guy from the second group. “You may think your as good as us but you never will be!” Yelled back a man from the first group.

Then in what was a blur to our young barmaid a fight broke out between the two groups it was loud and she could hear glass and wood breaking all around her as the men cursed and screamed at each other. This young Girl was scared and she feared for her life.

Her fear abated a little when in the distance she heard sirens. The police are coming, she thought to herself as she hid behind the bar. The police arrived in force and they stormed in arresting the men and taking them away. When things got quite and all the men where taken away the young girl looked around the small bar. So much damage she thought to herself, She looked at one of the officers and asked how did you know to come here. We got a call that these two groups where both heading to this bar and we just knew, it happens all the time with these type of guys!!!

Epilogue: The next morning when the young barmaid awoke she walked down stairs to the kitchen where her father was reading the morning paper. Does it say anything about the fight in the bar yesterday she asked her father? Yes he said as he pointed to a small article in the back of the paper “Yankees and Mets fans Brawl it out in small town bar” the story went on to explain how all the men where given tickets for disorderly conduct and released. That’s it she screamed at her father these men trash the bar, scare the hell out of me, They should all be in jail and all they get is Tickets!!! Calm down sweetheart her father said as he hugged her, The way your acting one would think it had been a bunch of rowdy Bikers in the bar yesterday! Those Guys would have been locked away, But it was only Sports fans!

Live To Ride Ride To Love

When I received the Novel “Iron Horse Rider” from the Author Adelle “Legs” Laudan I have to admit I was expecting a book about a Biker fighting and causing trouble. You know your Typical Biker Bad Boy Story. What I received was something I was not expecting at all.

The Novel Tells the story of a hardcore biker named Shane, Shane had always kept women at arms length and showed them no emotion, That was until he met Kelly. Try as he might this biker who had always kept to himself could not fight off his feelings for her and soon found himself Married to the Women of his dreams.

After 10 years of Marriage Kelly is taken from Shane in a Tragic accident while they are Ridding. Shane finds everything around him reminds him of Kelly, His home, his shop, even his Clubhouse. His Brother’s try to Support and comfort him, but the looks of sorrow in their eyes for him is more then Shane can bare. He soon realizes staying in the world He has Known and loved is not an option. Soon Shane is on his Iron Horse with the wind in his face and no destination! As Shane rides He finds the pain he feels for his loss begin to lessen!

With advice from a Mysterious Biker he keeps running into, Shane finds himself at a Micmac Indian Camp. Shane is welcomed into the Camp by the Tribes Chief and soon finds himself becoming Friends with the Chief’s Daughter Tia who has recently lost her Husband! While the two Share their pain they soon begin to feel something for each other. Is it possible for either of them to feel love again while still suffering from such a great loss? A member of Tia’s Tribe is taking no chances and tells Shane to stay away from Tia. He soon finds out you never tell a Biker like Shane what to do!

I found the writing in this novel while in no way simplistic was easy to read. I also found the story easy to follow ! Adelle “Legs” Laudan describes and expresses the feelings of Biker Brotherhood perfectly. When She explains Shane’s feelings while Riding you can see in your mind where he is and you can almost feel the wind in your Face!

In life we all have our worlds we live in, When something Terrible happens sometimes We cling to what We know. Shane does what He as a true Biker must after such a terrible loss, He goes out and finds not only a new life but a new World to live in for a while.

I have to say I enjoyed the story. It was not what I was expecting or would usually read but I found I could not put the book down. I think some Men who Ride will enjoy this book, While many I feel will find it a little too much of a Romance novel! I do believe almost all Women who has ever ridden a Motorcycle or dated a Man who rode one will love this Novel.

As I know now Adelle “Legs” Laudan is a writer of Motorcycle Romance Novels, She works to promote the image of Motorcycling one book at a time! No Charity Event For Motorcycle Club Members

December 25, 2009 by L.J. James · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Motorcycle and Motorcycle Safety

A few weeks back I received an email from a girl Kim about a Charity Motorcycle event she was working on for Bide A Wee an Animal shelter I worked at when I was younger. As I read the info I was looking forward to attending the event only to find it was being held at Jugs and Strokers the only “Biker Bar” on Long Island that does not allow Motorcycle Club Colors. I was pissed to find out I would not be welcome at this event. I then saw the email had been sent out to many other Motorcycle Clubs on Long Island. Pissed Off, I started writing a reply to the email and sent it out to the MC’s here on Long Island. Here is what I wrote.

Hey everyone this is LJ James.

You may not know this but I worked at Bide A Wee in Wantagh for many years. I have some great memories of my time working there. As much as I love the place and think Bide A Wee to be a truly great organization, I will not take off my Colors to go inside Jugs & Strokers to attend this event.

I see this email is addressed to many different Clubs. Some of your beliefs may be different then mine and you may take your Colors off to attend this event. I would hope all of you have more respect for your Club then to do that, but these are my beliefs and may not be yours.

I think it is only fair to Kim who is working very hard for this very worthy cause that she know what your feelings are about the Jugs and Strokers policy in regards to Colors. Kim has spent a lot of time working on this event and I would hate to see her event fail because she is unaware of the Revulsion Jugs and Strokers has towards Motorcycle Clubs!!!

Not only is it an old out dated Policy that promotes the Division of Motorcycle Riders, it is also illegal according to NY State Law! I have been working hard to protect and promote Motorcycle Rights and Unity here in NY and world wide. I think it is time We started working hard to change what is wrong here on Long Island! There is an old saying, “if you want to fix the world start in your own back yard”.

This is an event that, when I heard about it I wanted to attend. Then I hear it is being held at Jugs and now I am “not allowed to attend”.

I am not a bad guy! You all out there know me. How many of your events have I covered in Magazines? How many of you have I DJed for? Not only your Club events but many of your personal family events! I’ve even preformed wedding ceremonies for a few of you and after I married you I Djed your wedding!!!

You too are also all good people. Your MCs have done many things to make Long Island a better place. You have fed the Hungry, Clothed the poor, and made sure every Child on Long Island had a Toy for the Holidays. Our patches stand for what is great about America! Why should we be made to feel that wearing our Colors is even the slightest bit wrong?

If you ask Jugs and Strokers, they might try to use the excuse “well its not your group its other groups who are the bad guys”. That is a cop out, a lie, and an attempt to divide the Long Island Motorcycle Club world!!!

Over the past few years here on Long Island we have seen a Unity in the Motorcycle Club World that many still can not believe. Sport Bike Clubs and Cruiser Clubs riding and hanging together. AMA Clubs and 1% Clubs attend each others events. Law Enforcement Clubs and Outlaw Clubs Breaking Bread and Drinking together at events. I have seen every type of rider hanging out together. This is the Biker dream people!!!

There was a time when we were all told that you could not have a bar on Long Island where all MCs where aloud to mingle together. That there would be nothing but fights and problems. Then JDs Place opened and shortly after that, the Myth was put to rest.

The Motorcycle World here on Long Island has become something We are all very proud of. I call out to all of you MCs, independents, and MROs like ABATE, it is time to end the humiliating practice that Jugs and Strokers has been aloud to inflict upon the Long Island Motorcycle World for far too long!!!

I am tired of this bar being allowed to claim it is a biker bar for bikers, but if your a member of a Motorcycle Club and wear your Colors, you are some how an undesirable, and unwelcome. I say time is up, Jugs and Stokers! You have made enough money off the Long Island Motorcycle world! You need to stop being part of the Problem and become part of the Solution!!!

I’m interested to know what the feelings are of the rest of you!!!

(Because of this reply, Shortly after I wrote this the event was switched to another Long Island Biker Bar “Sick Moon Saloon” That welcomes all who Ride)

More Info About Motor Scooters And Their Interesting History

August 14, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment

A good definition of a motor scooter is a bike with fairly small wheels and a small engine which is geared to the back wheel. The first patents for “foot powered” scooters were granted in 1921. Up to that time there were no motors attached to the scooter. They were driven by “foot power.” You can learn more at Vespa for sale.

The old-fashioned foot-powered push scooter was updated to a Razor motor scooter under the direction of Gino Tsai, whose father was a mechanical engineer for the J. D. Corporation in Shanghai, Taiwan. His motor scooter took about 5 years to design. Go to Italian scooters for more details.

Gino Tsai claims that the reason he invented the Razor motor scooter was due to the fact that his father had to walk for miles every day around the huge bicycle factory that he worked for because of his short legs. He wanted to put a stop to this and so invented the Razor motor scooter as a solution.

When Gino completed the development of his motor scooter he began to promote it to the public. It very quickly became a hot property with consumers waiting up to six months for their new product.

How can the popularity of the motor scooter be explained? The Razor scooter was made from lightweight airplane grade aluminum which can support over 1000 pounds without bending. It can be folded, which means it can be kept in a small area. It has small polyurethane wheels and a low-powered engine. Braking is motioned by stepping down on the rear fender.

Today there are many different brands and models of motor scooters. We have electric scooters and gas powered motor scooters. They are very versatile and functional, serving many different purposes. Compared to a motorbike they have smaller sized wheels, a less powerful engine and you can “step through” which is different from a motorcycle.

The most commonly seen style of scooter is the “folding,” or “foldable,” scooter. These are two-wheeled models that are typically used for traveling short distances around the city. Braking occurs when the back fender is stepped on, putting pressure on the back wheel and stopping its movement. This type of motor scooter is made for kids or adults and can also be used to perform tricks on. It is very compact in size and can be folded for storage in small places.

A unique feature of freestyle folding motor scooters is the “kicktail,” a portion of the foot deck that extends over the back wheel. This is what provides the leverage for performing tricks. Motor scooters with “kicktails” are called freestyle scooters and usually have hand brakes due to the fact that the back fender allows for the performance of tricks instead of braking.

Electric scooters are generally bigger and heavier. Because of the extra weight they consume more power and can only go shorter distances when compared with the folding scooters. You may need to recharge the battery after a short distance of maybe 15 miles or so.

These electric, or battery-powered, motor scooters are often used to travel short distances around the neighborhood or perhaps on a school campus or other confined environment. They are particularly popular among the elderly, handicapped and disabled. Instead of being confined at home these elderly or handicapped people can now have some of their former independence returned to them. Motor scooters of this variety are usually called mobility scooters.

To get a greater speed you will generally need a gas scooter which is far more powerful than a folding type. They can also travel longer distances when a larger fuel tank is added. Gas scooters may not be permitted in some areas so it is good practice to find out the laws and regulations in your area before buying a motor scooter. Check out used Vespa scooters for more informtion.

Motorcycles Are So Much Extra Excitement That Everyone Ought To Own One
