OM And LOGOS
In Christianity we call the primal vibration, from which everything comes from, the word. In Hinduism the equivalent is the sound word or mantra OM. OM and the word express the universal principle, a cosmic sound or vibration, which is the original source for everything that exists.
The same thing is described by Pythagoras in his philosophical idea about the Music of the Spheres, where the physical sound that we can hear is seen just as a reflection of the cosmic sound, in Greek called Logos.
Christianity And The Word
The Christian tradition speaks of the power of the word. God speaks words and creates universes. “God said: Let there be light. And light came” (book of Moses). God utters words and the universe is created.
This is symbolically a form of sound emanation from a higher reality, which we in our physical reality call a word. The symbolism is clear, and is the same in different spiritual and religious traditions; reality is created by sound or vibration.
OM and ATOM
Thought the Upanishads from ancient India and modern physics are completely different in terminology and in the organization of knowledge there are some striking similarities. Both support the idea that OM is the original cosmic vibration or that the universe has its seat in vibration.

a) Understand Meditation
1. You can start by understanding what meditation is. It is a continuous flow of thought on one object. Meditation is the upholding of focus on one idea alone like the continuous flow of oil. Yogis call this process “Dyana”. Bhaktis call it adoration.
Concentration fixes the mind on a point or object, either inside the body or outside the body as any outside object or image. Meditation naturally follows concentration. In the process of Dhyana all the normal thoughts are shut off from the mind and replaced with Divine thoughts and Divine presence.
(b) Finding The Place
2. Have a separate meditation-room under lock and key. Do not allow anybody to enter the room. Keep it holy. Burn incense in the morning and evening. Keep an icon of God or your Guru. Place your chair in front of the picture. Also, keep some spiritual books such as the Yoga Sutras and other scriptures inside the room.
In deep meditation the vibrations produces will lodge themselves into the ether of the room. After six months you will feel deeply in peace in the atmosphere of the room. Whenever you feel your mind agitated or disturbed you can sit in the room and repeat a mantra for half an hour. You will feel an immediate change within your being.
Practice and feel the soothing spiritual influence it will have on yourself. Nothing compares to spiritual Sadhana. It will create a sacred place in your own house.
3. Solitude and intense meditation are two important requirements for Self-realization. A place of pilgrimage, a Himalayan scenery, a lovely flower-garden, a sacred temple, these are the places which elevate the mind for concentration and meditation. Use them when necessary.
4. A cool place with a mild climate is a must for concentrating the mind. As salt will melt in water, the pure mind melts in the silence brought in through meditating upon the Absolute.
(c) Time
5. Get up at 4 in the morning (the hour of Brahmamuhurta). It is very favourable for spiritual contemplation and devotional practices. Early in the morning the mind is calm, pure and quite refreshed after sleep. The mind is like a blank sheet of paper and comparatively free from worldly Samskaras (mental impressions).
The mind is easily moulded at this hour as the atmosphere is filled with light and purity. If you do not feel to take a bath or shower you can wash your hands, feet and your face with cold water. This suffices.
6. Always choose the part of the day or night when your mind is clear and when you are least likely to be disturbed. The mind will be calmer and more malleable at this time.
7. Meditate on Sundays as the mind is more at ease on holidays. You will also find that your meditation improves if you only drink milk and eat fruit. Also fasting helps tremendously in the attainment of focused meditation.
(d) Place of Concentration
8. Focus gently in the heart area or between the eyes in the forehead. Keep your eyes closed.
9. Your mind sits in Ajna Chakra in a place called Trikuti. Focusing on Trikuti easily controls the mind. Bhakti yogis should focus on the heart. Yogis should focus on Ajna.
10. At the top of the head there is an energy center called Sahasrara which is another great place to concentrate. Vedantins focus in this point. Some yogis focus on their nose tips (Nasikagra Drishti). Tenaciously stick to one place of focus for the quickest results.
If you decide to concentrate on the heart area, stay with it and don’t change it. If you are a devotional type you can let your guru find the center you should focus upon, else you can find it yourself.
(e) Yogic Diet
11. Keep your diet pure and light. To fill up the stomach with rice, bread and vegetables will make you very sleepy and will interfere with your sadhana. A diet of milk keeps the body light, pure and alert.
By following these guidelines you will find yourself being able to sit at ease in yoga positions for long periods of time, up til hours. If you feel weak though, you can take some milk and rice. Those with an intense program of keeping lectures and other spiritual activities should have a solid diet though.
(f) Asana
12. Yoga positions (Asanas) make the body more stable. Contractions (Bandhas) and inner attitudes (Mudras) will make the mind more strong. Breathing exercises (Pranayama) will make the body feel lighter. Purification of the energy paths (Nadi suddhi) will give you steadiness of mind. Once these things have been attained you can fix your mind on the Divine. Meditation will in this way become easy and you will find yourself in states of uplifted bliss.
It is highly recommended to practice the lotus pose (Padmasana) or Siddhasana for the attainment of meditation and concentration. For health it is good for you to be sexually continent. This can be attained through Paschimottanasana, Matsyasana, Brahmacharyasana, Sarvangasana and Shirshasana (amongst many other Asanas).
