Fitting And Wiring An Electrical Shower

March 14, 2010 by Scott Rodgers · Leave a Comment
Filed under: House and Home

Electric showers are a very economical way of washing, the amount of water used is about a third of that used by having a bath and the shower only heats the correct amount of water so there is no heating of water that you will not use.

Since, these slash down the water and electricity consumption in house, these are probably the best.

The article familiarizes you with the stepwise procedure to install the electric shower in the right manner. Determine the place where you want to install the shower unit. Mark the place and drill pilot holes in the wall. To mark the place on the wall, remove the backing of the shower unit and use that as a template.

Before fixing the unit in place, drill any holes through the wall or ceiling needed for pipes and cable. Also drill and fit the wall bracket or sliding rail for the shower handset. To attach the copper pipe to the rising main, first turn off the main stopcock and run the cold tap dry.

You make the mains connection using a 15mm compression tee fixing. Cut out a section from the mains pipe just long enough to accommodate the tee fitting. Insert your new pipe into the third arm of the tee fitting and fit a stop valve at a convenient point before running the pipe work all the way to the unit.

Next step is to provide power to the shower unit. In order to mount the pull switch, drill a hole in the ceiling. The cable is run from the consumer unit through the property to a suitable pull switch inside the bathroom and on to the electric shower. Cable of length 6 inches should be left at the switch position.

Attach the pull-switch back plate and strip the excess cable at the switch position, revealing one black wire, one red wire and a group of bare wires. Twist the bare wires together attaching them to the “E” terminal, the red wire to the “L” terminal and the black wire to the “N” terminal of the pull switch.

Do the same on the shower unit end. The wires located on the shower unit should be connected to the main terminals of the pull switch. Connect the red, black and bare wires to “L”, “N” and “E” terminals respectively.

Carpet And Upholstery Cleaning.

March 10, 2010 by Steve Adams · Leave a Comment

There are various ways to approach carpet and upholstery cleaning. The kind of material as well as the reason you are cleaning it will determine which specific method you will use Regardless of whether you are planning on using a professional carpet cleaning service or you feel energetic enough to do it yourself, here are some of the basics on cleaning upholstery, rugs and carpets

Carpet and rug cleaning methods

Basically there are five basic methods of cleaning carpets namely, steaming, shampooing, dry foam, quick dry, and dry absorbent compound cleaning.

Hot water extraction (steam) is often the most common of all the normally used methods but since the drying time can be up to 12 hours depending on the material, this is not always the best solution. A strong pump sprays a cleaning solution on to the carpet or rug which then gets sucked out with all the dirt by a powerful vacuum.

Any appliance store can offer you a wide variety of carpet cleaning machines. Many of these appliances are upright, free standing units with a solution tank for the cleaning fluid and two or three nylon brushes on the underside. The procedure is the automated version of somebody cleaning with a scrubbing brush in that the dirt is loosened by the brushes and then the dirt and dust is then vacuumed (normally with a separate vacuum cleaner) afterwards. As with steam cleaning, the carpet takes about 12 hours to dry.

Cleaning using the quick dry method may actually seem to be the same as carpet shampooing but the machine is slightly different in that, instead of brushes, it uses a couple of absorbent pads. A quick dry cleaning detergent is first spread over the carpet and then the machine buffs the carpet clean by absorbing the detergent as well as the dirt. The process is similar to buffing your tiled floors. It takes about an hour to dry so this method is ideal for high traffic areas.

Dry Foam cleaning is a mixture between shampooing and hot water extraction. Foam is introduced to the carpet by a machine with rolling brushes and the carpet is then vacuumed to remove the dirt. The drying time, dependent on the carpet type of course, is between an hour or two.

A dry, absorbent compound which contains various solvents and detergents are spread lightly over the carpet. Either you, or the professional carpet cleaner you hire, will use a machine which works the powder into the carpet fibers after which you need to let some time go by while the powder absorbs the dirt and smells. After a short while (depending on the brand of powder you use), vacuum the carpet so that it removes the remainder of the powder. Since no water is ever used on the carpet there is no need for any drying time.

How to clean upholstery

The material to be cleaned is the deciding factor when choosing what method you will use to clean. Velvets and silks, for example, should only be dry cleaned and are therefore best left to a professional cleaning service. Some stronger materials, however, can be wet cleaned and this can be done using steam in the same manner that you would use with carpets and rugs. The only difference in the machine is the size of the nozzle which is small enough to be hand held. Most fabrics can also be shampooed but we recommend that you only use the foam of the solution not the liquid and then apply this with a damp sponge.

Identifying Upholstery

Most people don?t know what the best method is for cleaning their fabric furniture. If you are lucky you will probably find a manufacturers label underneath one of the cushions which will contain the cleaning instructions and various suggestions and warnings. Mostly you are looking for a code at the top or bottom of the label with a ‘S’, ‘W’ or ‘SW’. The ‘S’ means that the material must be dry cleaned while the ‘W’ means wet cleaning is allowed thus allowing for shampoo or steam cleaning methods. The ‘SW’ indicates that both wet and dry cleaning methods are acceptable for the material.

Suggestions For Bathroom Renovation

March 6, 2010 by Richard Owen · Leave a Comment

Renovating the bathroom is an important decision that requires a lot of planning. You spend a substantial portion of your time in the bathroom, hence the ambiance of the bathroom should be such that you feel relaxed and are able to make use of all the amenities present. These are a few suggestions for achieving positive results from renovation of your bathroom.

Step one is to work upon a remodelling plan for your bathroom. Comparing the prices of material from a number of suppliers and extensive planning will ensure that you get the bathroom that is best suited to your tastes and with minimum expenses from your side. Keep in mind different factors such as the colour, design and fittings prior to proceeding with the execution of the plan.

Second, check the limitations of the area you have and the types of use you can put it to. A small bathroom can still be beautiful if you plan well and allow plenty of natural light to enter so that the space appears to be larger. Also remember external aspects such as weather, temperature, and the layout of your residence.

Third, make use of fixtures cautiously. The chosen fixtures must be durable and they must have a high utility. They must blend with the overall appearance of the bathroom. Choose lighting that makes it easy for you to perform tasks like shaving and putting on make-up. While selecting fixtures, ensure that they are not going to cause any safety hazards. For example, the shower area and the bathtub must have floors that prevent slipping, while the electrical devices should not be near any water outlet.

Lastly, search for an expert designer and contractor for carrying out your renovation, but you could also take care of a few simple parts of the task without outside assistance, like fixing a towel rail. If your house is in Singapore then you can look for a bathroom designer to work on the renovation by simply running a search on ‘Renovations Singapore’ on any search engine.

Domestic Toilet Hire For Renovation Work – Tips & Hints

March 5, 2010 by Trevor Gronholm · Leave a Comment

A plumber can be your toilet hire and fix your sinks and fixtures, but a landscaper can do these things as well as landscaping the home garden by putting in an entire irrigation system into your lawn and garden. You see, the latter needs to know about plumbing before he can provide a sprinkler system to your geraniums. So, if you have a problem with the toilet, hire your landscape designer to do the job.

Because pine trees may need to be watered less than roses, your landscaper will know how to set up your timed sprinkling system. He may even be able to plant a cactus in one area, and a garden of color in another. He can dig the trench for piping, lay the pipe, assemble it using specialized quick-drying glue, and connect it all to your timer box for appropriate watering of your plants.

You will be able to work with him as far as picking out the right plants for your property. You may want a huge shade tree in your front yard, roses around your entrance, and a tulip garden around the side of the house. In the back, you may decide on a fruit tree, some decorative shrubs, and a trellis with climbing vines leading to a gazebo. All this can be worked out with your gardener.

Your specialist has an education of what types of shrubbery, trees, flowers and grasses need what soil amendments. They may need iron, or perhaps the soil is acidic and needs fertilizers with less salt in them. He will know what to add to make your lawn and garden flourish.

If you pay attention to a color scheme, your knowledgeable planter will have many suggestions to fit that bill, as well. Perhaps a flowering plum would do well as an ornamental tree out front. Its purplish leaves may go well with the color of the roses you have chosen for around the porch. And the backyard can boast a different scheme. There is so much to choose from, no matter where you live. From the deserts of Nevada to the lush, more humid weather in North Carolina, you should be able to find a gardening expert for your particular area that knows what is best for you.

So, should you go green or go chemicals? The choice is yours, and the results may differ, or not. There are those who claim that all-organic is the way to go, for the earth, as well as for the plants, and the growth will be healthy and abundant. Then there are others who claim that insects need to be put in check with chemicals in order for the vegetation to continue without being attacked. Note that there are also natural ways to keep bugs under control.

Your professional desires to satisfy your every gardening need. So ask questions. Do not hold back if you are confused about something. He will gladly explain it all to you. You need only ask.

And as a reminder, your irrigating landscaper is a plumber as well. He was a plumber first. Remember that, and you will know who to call when you and landscaping the home garden or have problems in the kitchen or the bathroom, outside or inside, with fixtures or hose bibs, hire this professional as a toilet hire to handle toilet and sink problems as well.

One of the most effective remodeling projects to undertake in the home is in the bathroom. It is a project that all family members will appreciate. Some years ago, the choice of bathroom vanities in stores was very limited. Today, however, there is an abundance of choice in vanity units, so much so that making a decision can be quite difficult. Before going out and buying a new bathroom vanity it is worth considering a few points first.

In the bathroom, the most common style of vanity unit found is the cabinet style which is useful for providing a lot of storage space. Although they can vary in height, they are commonly around thirty three to thirty five inches high. If you need a different height, they can be made to order. They are often cheaper then more modern, contemporary styles due to their popularity. If your requirements include storage space then the cabinet style is the one to look at.

The next type to look at are the furniture style vanity units. Compared to the other styles they are smaller making them go especially well in smaller bathrooms. They look like a pieces of furniture which is freestanding, making them perfect for the small bathroom. They offer a quick and easy method of updating the bathroom without having to make any major changes to the room. They come in a number of styles from those with more storage to others with a more contemporary look.

The vessel vanity bathroom vanity is the next to consider. These consist of a freestanding, modern looking vanity unit with a bowl shaped sink sitting on top of it. The sinks are often many different materials from granite to glass. They are great for the smaller bathroom and will free up some space. These varieties will create a great contemporary look in the bathroom.

Think about the size of your bathroom when trying to decide which one to buy. If your bathroom is small and you want to increase the space then go for a freestanding unit. Also the style of your bathroom is important. Furniture style units go well in traditional style bathrooms compared to the vessel units which are more suited to the modern look. Cost is an important factor, with the vessel setup being more expensive.

When looking at the cost, also consider that an updated bathroom could increase the value of your house which could make up for the cost of the vanity. When doing your initial research, going online is a great place to start. You can find examples of all the various styles along with costs.

The Proper Way To Use Your Garbage Disposal

If it breaks down, and you have to call in the home insurance man, if you have put any of the following down there then he may well refuse to pay out on the basis that it was your fault.

Paper – Once this gets wet then it clings to the inside machinery and clogs it up.

Plastic – This is simply too tough to process.

Bones – Even small ones a problem because they get wedged in the disposal tube.

Eggshells – Bad, they only clog your disposal system.

Grease – It will stick to, and build up on the disposal tube.

Stringy Vegetables – These do not do well in the garbage disposal because they become balls that clog the entire system up.

Coffee Grounds – A little at a time you might get away with but not a whole basket full.

Rice & Noodles – The high starch content causes a bad reaction with the other items put in with them.

You must be wondering – so what can I put in there? Anything that is easily chopped up and blended is fine. Apply some common sense and follow the golden rule – “If in doubt, keep it out”.

Now you know what items to keep out of your garbage disposal, here are some additional tips to keep your garbage disposal in top condition…

- Regularly pour water down it.

- Occasionally put ice in there as it will scrape off food items stuck to the side of the tube.

- Throw some lime or lemon juice down there every so often to keep it smelling fresh.

Following the above advice will ensure that your garbage disposal stays in good working order for as long as possible. Repairs are expensive so, to avoid a difficult conversation with the guy from your home insurance provider, make sure that you look after yours.

Secure Your Galvanized Metal Roof Paint With

February 23, 2010 by Scott Rodgers · Leave a Comment
Filed under: House and Home

The old corrugated metal roofs that were seen many years ago have been abruptly replaced by the galvanized metal roofs. Well, this happened mainly because of their low or you can say negligible resistance to rust and corrosion.

Many metal roofs are made out of galvanized metal, which is a type of metal that has been covered with hot zinc in order to protect it from the weather. In order to further enhance the feature of material, roofs are generally painted. However, paint on metal roofs often peels or rusts, in which case it is time to repaint it.

The write up below familiarizes you with the step by step procedure of the metal roof painting. This is one of the most simple home improvement tasks and you can do this without the help of a roofer.

A galvanized metal roof should be thoroughly cleaned free from all the accumulated dirt and grin, should be free of any loose or scaling rust by hand tooling these areas with a wire brush or a scraper. Using a power washer, all the unwanted build up over the roof should be cleared.

Chlorinated bleach and a solution of hot-warm water and tri- sodium phosphate will ensure the complete termination of mildew growth whether it is seen by the eye or secluded. Make use of a paint roller to apply it on the roof. Allow it dry completely. Thoroughly wash off the solution from the roof surface.

Another most important thing is, to coat a layer of galvanized primer over the roof before putting any paint. Allow the primer to dry completely.

Apply the paint with a sprayer for the most uniform coverage. Be sure to choose a paint that will hold up to the weather. You can easily have them from any of the home improvement store. Homes in moist weather, usually use aliphatic urethane paint. Whereas, fir homes in dry areas go for acrylic urethane.

Two coats should be applied to the roof. Make sure, you allow the first coat to dry before applying the second one. Moreover, homeowners are advised not to use harsh paints for galvanized metals roofs as these are toxic.
