The beta trials of the Microsoft adCenter Analytics package, initially launched as Gatineau, came to an abrupt end in March 2009.
When the beta program was launched, back in 2007, the package was hailed by many as a viable competitor for Google analytics. There was much excitement when Gatineauw as launched as many suggested that it would be a viable competitor for Google Analytics. Notable SEO gurus like Dave Naylor told us that Gatineau was awesome and that it would provide reports and visualisations that we had only ever dreamed of. So what went wrong?
Gatineau used tracking code that was very similar to Google Analytics. Once installed you were able to access your analytics data from the Analytics link provided from your Microsoft adCenter interface. Gatineau provided plenty of 3D charts and neat visualisations not dissimilar to those provided by Google Analytics but it didn’t really add any value.
One of the key features that Microsoft used to promote Gatineau was its ability to segregate traffic based upon certain factors such as Age, Gender, Occupation and Geographical location. This promised to be a particularly useful feature but it did require that site visitors were signed in with their .net ID. In truth the reports were not very useful as the vast majority of visitors could not be identified.
One of the negative comments from Gatineau users, including many Internet Marketing professionals, was that it took too long to get to the reports and would often time out. This was a significant issue for many Gatineau users who pointed out that Google Analytics doesn’t have this problem.
The key USP for Gatineau was hailed as its ability to segment traffic based upon factors such as Age, Gender, Occupation etc. But, as noted, this feature was actually not very good. The vast majority of site visitors were indistinguishable so this supposed USP was a non-starter.
Another factor to consider is that the number of Gatineau users appears to have been very low. The precise number of websites where Gatineau (or Ad center Analytics as it was renamed) was installed and used is not widely reported, but it is thought that the number was very low.
A factor that I think is crucial in the Gatineau failure is that, initially, it required payment of a $5 sign up fee. This charge was removed when the Beta2 version of the product was launched in 2008, but already a vast number of prospective users were put off by the initial sign up fee.
Another aspect of Gatineau that let it down was the absence of a helpful and vibrant blogging community of helpful users. This is one of the features of Google Analytics that has made it so popular: the community of users who blog about what they are doing and who are always willing to help others with their Analytics questions.
Many have said that Google Analytics dominance in the Web Analytics market is largely due to the ‘free’ price tag. Microsoft got it wrong on day one by setting the $5 sign-up fee. If Adcenter Analytics had been free from the outset we might be telling a different story today.

I would say…. go tell your mom or boyfriend first, your mom will help you out and so will your boyfriend. In my situation, my mom kept asking me when I was going to get my period because we always got it on the same week. She was worried so she bought me a pee test. That same night I found out I was pregnant, my mom was kind of disappointed and scared for me. I was a little scared because I didn’t have a job or anything. I told my boyfriend and he told me he was gonna be with me no matter what, for anything. When John found out, he said he was going to get a job and support me and my baby. So that made me not be nervous or scared anymore. My mom and John both support me and are helping me through it.
You will both make great parents, and offer so much hope to teens who are
pregnant and afraid. Tell us more about yourself?
I love having people around me. I’m with John everyday. I sleep at his house every weekend. I love watching TV like; Two and a Half Men, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Still Standing, King of Queens, and Maury. I love playing video games with John. Sometimes I go for walks on a trail, so I stay fit. I walk mostly everywhere. I love seeing my baby on the ultra sound, and I also love feeling the baby kick and move around. That’s what I love about pregnancy. And I want my baby to come out right now, so I can hold it and love it. I think I am goin to be a good mom and I think John’s going to be a good dad. He also loves when the baby kicks for him – he gets SO happy. I also enjoy swimming, going out to eat, going to the movies, and generally, just being around people.

At times I post freelance writing jobs on my blog for other writers. Employers advertise on my site indirectly. On the other hand this service is extremely appreciated by a number of my visitors who are in search for work. Instead of visiting countless web pages, many writers come directly to my blog to see what I advertise on my site.
Personally I like consistency so I prefer to take on solid projects with reliable clients. Nonetheless, there is something very appealing about the thrill of the chase. Despite the fact that I don’t advertise on my site to find work for myself however I do get a kick out of hunting down the offers. Besides I appreciate the feedback given from the writers who find work through my blog. I simply cannot imagine looking for work on a daily basis. Well, actually, I can because I do search every day. Frankly speaking I really can’t imagine relying on the search for my livelihood.
A number of the readers who visit the blog sometimes leave messages just to let me know that they were hired for one project or another. For sure, these messages make my day! I’m happy to know that the site is doing some good. Unfortunately, one of my readers became offended that I use Google advertisements on my site. Indeed she wanted to know why I advertise on my blog for profit. Well, the profit is quite small. In fact I have found that writers are not really clickers. And in my opinion I also think that clicking on one or two ads is not a big price for the service I provide.
Now this brings to mind the question about blog etiquette. A lot of seasoned bloggers get aggravated by the site of advertisements. Nevertheless, these readers should consider the purpose of the site before passing judgment.
The reason behind why I advertise on my site is because it offers a valuable service. Of course, the reader has the option of scrolling down past the advertisements if he isn’t happy with them. There is absolutely no obligation at all to click on an ad. The fact is that several of my readers commented that they didn’t even notice that I advertise on my blog until the complaint was posted on my site. I’d like to thank that person for complaining. This way my readers are taking time to give me a few clicks now!
