5 Tips To Help You Start Your Post-College Life

May 10, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Jobs and Careers

As you might know, I am a college graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Mathematics. When I graduated, however, I didn’t really have an idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I knew, though, that I a) wanted an IT career that wasn’t heavy on programming, b) wanted to live in an area where I didn’t have to spend a lot on my house/apartment and where I had a social circle, and c) did NOT want to go to grad school. With that being said, here are some things that I have learned about the working world. They all might not directly apply to each of you, but they worked for me and I hope you can take some of these to heart.

1) It doesn’t matter what you got your college degree in

I can’t stress this enough. I spent my first two years of college major hunting before I finally settled on what something I loved and not what I thought I was supposed to be doing. My advice if you’re still in college (or entering college): choose a major that you not only thoroughly enjoy but that you are also good at. Even if you’re planning on going to med school or law school, you’d be surprised at how little your major matters, as long as you take the necessary electives. I got a job as a Systems Engineer for an IT firm with a nice salary and great benefits with a math degree and an average GPA. I didn’t take a single class in college that taught me anything about what I did on the job. However, times are tough right now so I no longer am employed, which brings me straight into my next point:

2) Network, network, NETWORK

Anybody who knows anything about life after college knows this is very crucial to having success in the working world. It really is all about who you know. If you’re still in college, get to know your professors. If you’re a college grad and aren’t working, reach out to anybody who knows you well and/or anybody whom you have a professional relationship with. Talk to former employers that you’ve had good experiences with and find out if there’s anything you can do. If nothing else, volunteer your skills. I know this doesn’t help you much short term but you never know when someone is going to notice you. Just make sure that you always make yourself presentable.

3) Keep in touch with people with whom you’ve established a relationship

This is probably something that I’m sure a lot of you fail to do. You establish strong professional relationships with people close to you (professors, employers, experts in a field, family friends, etc) but you fail to keep in touch with them and eventually the relationship drops off. This is a HUGE mistake. In this day and age, you never know when the economy might leave you unemployed and searching for work. How nice would it be to have a contact who can mention your name to a colleague and immediately have the ball rolling again on your career? And a lot of you might also be surprised to find out how easy it is to maintain contact with people. Send them a card during the holidays and on their birthday. Email them or write them a letter thanking them for any impact they’ve had on your career. Simple things to make them think about you and remember you. Doing this could really come in handy down the road, especially if they’re looking for help.

4) Don’t be afraid to settle if needed

So you went to college for four (or more) years and have a degree you’re pretty happy with. You made good grades and were quite active on campus. You interviewed with several companies who all seemed to like you. You’re feeling pretty high on life and can’t wait to start your career. However, none of the job offers that you got pay you what you feel you deserve. That’s ok. You’re 22 years old and you’re a recent college grad; there’s no need to panic. This isn’t the time to freak out about finding your dream job with a company that’s going to set you for life. Get your foot in the door, stand out at your position, and make sure you do plenty of networking. I made the mistake of letting my ego get in the way of my voice of reason and it kept me from getting a decent, but not great job. After I got laid off, I got offered the chance to take a position with an old employer making significantly less money than I was making before the layoff. Of course I told myself that I deserved better and thought I would be better suited sucking it up and searching for a higher paying position. Safe to say right now is not the best time to be getting greedy. Don’t rush your career. If you’re really good at what you do, people will notice and things will fall into place.

5) Don’t forget about your personal life

Working or not, you’ve got to make sure that you’re happy with who you are away from work. If you’re not happy at home, you won’t be happy at your job and your work will most likely suffer from it. Maintaining that level of work/life balance is absolutely critical to keep sane. For me, location is much more important than starting salary. Like I said in #4, I know the money will eventually come as long as I continue to impress those around me. I want to make sure, most importantly, that I’m happy in the city that I’m working and that largely depends on the people I’m around. I love having friends and family to come home to that I care about and enjoy being around. On a personal level, I feel very good about my quality of life and I wouldn’t even think about giving that up to move to a foreign place. That might work for some people but not me. Regardless on the kind of decisions you make about where you work, I strongly urge you to enjoy yourself outside of the office.

Your Career

There you go. Five simple things that I’ve experienced that I feel are useful to anybody starting the job process. What do you think? Is there anything that you picked up while you were going through that part of your life that really helped you out?

Regrettably, all through the years, more and more people are becoming victims of enormous credit card debts that they probably will in no way get paid off. So You Want To Be An Online Marketer?

When I first became excited by the prospect of starting an internet business I had no idea of the difficulties and challenges I was about to face – all I visualised was all the money I was about to make, and I remember setting about my initial activities with all the gusto of the ignorant who blissfully enter into the forest without the first inkling of the dangers within. After all, I had been in IT for many years, and had successfully produced websites for others, promoting offline clients’ businesses online. So I approached Internet Marketing with confidence – how difficult could it be for someone as experienced as I?

The shocking truth was that I had much to learn, even given my existing knowledge, and now, after several years in the game – and it is a game, with constantly changing rules – I have understood what it takes:

Time

There is a saying I have always enjoyed – “If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment”. If you think you will be an overnight sensation, and of course I hope that you do, you may well be disappointed. In most cases, it takes time, as all things do that become sustainable. And it can eat up a lot of money while you’re investing that time. If you’re lucky, you’ll cover your costs right from the start. If not, be prepared to make some sacrifices in the short term…

Learning

Fact is, you are going to need a whole bunch of new skills that you will have to apply to this strange, virtual world. I had to learn sales copywriting – being a ‘techie’, I had never had to sell very much, and so it was a totally new process to me. It did not happen overnight – I made plenty of mistakes before finally discovering my own ’style’ which complemented my personality, and with which I felt comfortable, but which was also effective with prospects. I also had to learn Internet Marketing Strategy, and had to keep up to date with changing trends in the marketplace. At the time of writing, Web 2.0 is all the rage, and Twitter and the social bookmarking sites are where you need to be if you want to promote successfully. Tomorrow, it will change, and you need to know about it. Learning never stops. Ever.

Determination

A healthy measure of stubbornness is very useful to anyone embarking on an Internet marketing career. I had a specific goal in mind when I started – I wanted to work from the comfort of home, my family of dogs around me all the time. I wanted to choose when I worked, how much I worked, and how I worked. I was simply not going to be satisfied until that was the case, and I was willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to get there. Today, as my dogs wander in and out of my house on my farm while I sit here and type at my desk surrounded by computers, I am living the dream. But I had to go through many dark days, in which there were times when I was not sure I would survive, in order to get here. I failed many times, often not sure why, in other cases learning harsh lessons that would enable me to step up the next time. But I was determined to see it through. My persistence paid off.

The Internet, like any business environment, is tricky and will present you with multiple challenges on a daily basis. But it is rewarding to an extent you will scarcely imagine when you first embark on the journey., both personally and financially. If you have the willingness to invest the time, learn everything you need to in order to succeed, and persist in the face of failure, the chances are you might become a successful Internet Entrepreneur. It really depends on you.

Derek

Teaching Your Pet Bird To Talk

May 10, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Pets

It is possible to train many species of pet birds to talk. The most obvious are members of the parrot family, but other talking birds include mynahs, jays and crows. If you are looking for a talking bird, it would be best to buy a parrot.

If it is kept indoors, the best method of teaching your bird to talk is to put the cage near the telephone. The first words that your parrot will speak will be the words that it has heard most often. Therefore, it will soon learn how to say ‘hello’.

If you wish to progress onto longer, more complicated words, repeat them over and over again and, as before, be prepared to be extremely patient. Remember that a large parrot, such as a macaw, has the equivalent intelligence of a four-year old child, and you should treat it as such.

At some time or other, you may hear a sudden screech from your bird’s cage. Do not be alarmed, for there is nothing physically wrong with it, it is simply seeking attention. Once it has your attention, it will stop screaming.

In fact, you can use the bird’s urge to seek attention to help you teach it how to talk. After your bird has just learned to say ‘hello’, ignore it for a while, then as soon as you hear it say ‘hello’, go to it and talk to it and reward it with a piece of its favourite food.

If you stay with the bird, it will stop talking because it has your attention. Then disappear around the corner, start repeating ‘hello’ and as soon as your bird says it, come back and reward it again. If you continue this routine, your bird will soon grasp the idea of it all.

Every parrot species is capable of talking, but there is no guarantee of success – it all depends on the character of the individual bird and the dedication of the trainer.

Teaching a parrot to talk can take a long time. It will help to have the bird around the house with you because if will hear lots of talking and stand a better chance of picking up a few words.

Remember above all that your pet bird has feelings as well and is very receptive to your emotions. If your pet bird senses that you are frustrated or angry with him for not talking as quickly as you would like, this will only have a negative effect on your bird’s progress and very possibly your relationship with your pet bird.

So stay calm and never show anger towards your bird, treat him with respect and remember that he is not a robot that should do what you want just because it is amusing to you.

Discover How To Stop Your Puppy From Excessive Digging Today!

by Jennifer Davis
Welcome to my article about stopping your dog from digging. Did you know dogs really enjoy digging around in soft dirt. You want to have a beautiful yard and a nice garden and your dog comes along and destroys it all. It is a big mess that you can hardly keep up with. You want a nice yard but your dog wants to have fun digging around. What is the best way to handle this problem?

Dogs are actually diggers by nature. Some breeds are even bred to be diggers as they hunt and dig out specific prey. It may be more challenging if your dog just digs naturally but you can still contain his digging behavior with a few training techniques.

Your dog digs to engage his curiosity and learn about his surroundings. This is a good thing but it can make it difficult to have a nice yard also. You must get him to stop digging completely or at the very least curb his digging behavior if you want to have a beautiful yard too.

Dogs sometimes dig because they are bored. They need entertainment. He may be suffering from separation anxiety because you are away. Maybe he isattempting to dig out an escape route so he can get out of the yard. He may even be digging because of something as simple as controlling his own temperature. He may be too hot and trying to cool off or he may be too cold and trying to get warm.

If your dog is digging excessively, first off make sure that he gets plenty of playtime and interaction time with you. You can also get him some fun toys that he will play with and hope that they will distract him from the digging. If you give your dog a bone to chew on he will often try to bury it so replace any bones with chew toys or rawhide bones that he won’t bury.

Clicker training often works well to eliminate digging. Watch and see when your dog starts to dig then click the clicker to distract him, give him a command that means “no digging” and give him a treat. With some persistence and consistency, clicker training can be very effective.

You can also try to dissuade your dog from digging by filling up his hole with undesirable items. Dogs like to dig in clean dirt so if you fill up his hole with rocks or twigs and even his own poop he won’t want to dig more. You could also try to bury a balloon that will pop when he starts to dig. The balloon will scare him but it won’t hurt him and it will probably stop him from digging more.

If your dog is a natural digger you could go along with his natural tendencies and train him to only dig in a certain place. This takes persistence but it can be very effective once you succeed. Be consistent in your training and you will get your dog to stop digging.

Clear Guidance On Stocking Tropical Freshwater Tank Aquariums: How To Add And Acclimatize Fish

May 10, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Pets

Now that you have set up your freshwater aquarium, I’m sure you can’t wait to see your tropical fish in action! Here are a number of tips to make sure this exciting and important part of your aquarium setup is a great success.

The Fishless Cycle
It is vital that you regulate the water in the tank to get it under the right conditions for the tropical fish you plan to introduce (temperature, pH, ammonia and nitrate levels etc). All freshwater aquariums need to be run for 2-8 weeks, depending on the size of your fish tank, to ensure the tank has ended its nitrogen cycle and the beneficial bacteria have been established. Your aquarium will have completed its cycle when ammonia and nitrite levels are undetected and nitrate reading levels are around 10.

Selecting Your Fish
You need to resist the urge of fully stocking tropical freshwater fish tank aquariums and start off small. Select two or three fish to begin with. I suggest starting with a hardy species such as White Clouds or Zebra Danios. Make sure you visit different pet shops to determine which ones have healthy, happy fish which will soon be content in your aquarium. It is important to observe the fish before buying to check for any evidences of sickness or injury. There are a few indicators about their behaviour and appearance that will let you know their state of health. Eyes should be bright and active, rather than seeming small or filmed over. Make sure the fish can feed itself and there are no fungal or bacterial infections in the soft tissues around the mouth. Check to see if the abdomen is ‘fat’ which means the fish is feeding well; a fish with a sunken abdomen is not likely to live too long. Scales should be smooth and even while missing scales and discoloured patches are signs of infection. Also note that the fish’s gills are moving regularly and not spasmodically. There should not be any tears or raggedness on the fins, the presence of which would indicate fighting with other fish or improper aquarium filtration.

Acclimatizing Your Fish
Transporting your fish from the pet shop to its new home is equally as stressful for fish as adults moving house! There are, however, ways to ease this stress and to slowly introduce the fish to its new habitat. Wrap the plastic bag the pet shop places your fish in, in a paper bag, and hold as still as possible for the journey home. If the journey is long, open the bag every thirty minutes to let fresh air in. When you arrive home, empty the contents of the plastic bag into a clean bucket. Ensure the environment in your aquarium is at its optimum for the benefit of your fish. Add a cup of water from your tank every 5 minutes. Repeat this until the water volume in the bucket has doubled. Empty half the volume and then repeat until the water volume is doubled again. This process should take around thirty minutes. Your fish should now be properly acclimatized to your tank water. This guarantees that tropical fish are not shocked when introduced into different fish tank aquariums.

Adding Your Fish
Now it is time to introduce them to your fish tank. Switch off the aquarium lights and leave them off for 3-4 hours after the fish are introduced to reduce stress as the fish adjust to the new setting. Use a net that is much larger than the fish to catch it in the bucket. Carefully place the net in the tank water and let the fish swim out. Repeat for each of your fish. Do not put any water from the bucket into your fish tank as part of it has come from the fish store and may contain disease or other unhealthy chemical levels, which you do not want to introduce into other tank aquariums. Instead fill your aquarium up with new water. If there are already other fish in your aquarium place the new fish in a separate aquarium for several days and observe for disease. Don’t add more than four fish at a time as this can cause a chemical imbalance in your tank. This is a much more effective method than the old way of floating pet shop’s plastic bags in tank aquariums as this does nothing to acclimatize fish to the various water parameters of different tropical freshwater fish tank aquariums.

A Little at a Time
You will then need to wait around another month before adding more fish. The reason for this is that it takes the fish a while to get used to their new environment and the more fish there are, the higher their stress levels. Plus there is an incubation time with diseases and you need to ensure the fish are healthy before contaminating others. Another reason is that the fish tank aquarium’s ecosystem also needs to adjust to its new inhabitants and the increased waste they discharge. Continue to watch the temperature, pH, ammonia and nitrate levels throughout this period.

Moving Tank is Stressful!
For the success of your tank aquariums please ensure you follow this extremely important process of acclimatization. Without it, fish that you introduce will become severely stressed, thereby weakening their immune system and making them susceptible to illness and even death. It is predominantly fish that make tropical freshwater aquariums beautiful and exciting so they deserve to be looked after. This ensures your lasting enjoyment!

The Top Ten Causes Of Varicosis

May 10, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Women

While Varicose Veins are often hereditary, there are other causes. Here I have listed the top ten causes for Varicose Veins Varicose veins are veins that have become twisted and enlarged. While varicose veins are primarily found in the leg, they can occur elsewhere. Varicose veins are distinguishable from telangiectasias (spider veins) and reticular veins (blue veins) by the location and size of the veins.

1) Heredity
The valve weakness that leads to varicose veins is sometimes hereditary with venous conditions. This impacts mainly in women due to female hormones ensuring that that most women have extremely loose connective tissue that provides poorer protection against over distension of the veins. Men are also prone to hereditary factors leading to venous conditions.

2) Age
The older we get, the more the walls of the veins become less elastic and more prone to venous disorders.

3) Lack of Exercise
Standing still or sitting down for long periods of time deactivates the muscular pumps resulting in a stagnation of blood in the legs and increasingly swollen veins. Long journeys by car, train and plane can be a severe strain on veins. Flexing your ankles periodically will pump the blood out of your legs (simulating walking). During periods of prolonged sitting or standing, flex your ankles 10 times and repeat this every 10 minutes.

4) High Heeled or plateau shoes
These restrict blood flow leading to venous conditions through prolonged wear over time.

5) Tightly fitting clothing
Again, tight fitting clothes can restrict blood flow.

6) Alcohol consumption during flight
The low pressure, low oxygen environment within an airliner cabin affects the coagulation system relating in thrombosis. Alcohol, Tea and Coffee act as diuretics, increasing the body’s dehydration. See point 10.

7) Obesity
Obesity is a risk factor for varicose veins and the vascular system in the legs due to increased pressure of excess fat. Inherited weakness of the valves in the veins and female hormonal problems (and pregnancy) are other risk factors.

8) Hot baths and excessive exposure to the sun
Avoid excessive heat on your legs, such as hot tubs and hot baths. Heat will tend to increase vein distention and lead to more pooling of blood. Always ensure that you flex your ankles on a regular basis to ensure blood movement.

9) Over indulgence in saunas and solariums
Similar result to point 8. If you do enjoy saunas, ensure that you flex you ankles regularly to minimise blood pooling.

10) Dehydration
Dehydration causes blood vessels to narrow and blood to thicken, increasing the risk for DVT. Reducing alcohol and coffee consumption, which both contribute to dehydration, is also recommended.
The best solution for varicose veins is to wear compression stockings. These stockings compress at the ankle to ensure that blood does not pool, but instead they aid the bloods progress back up the leg.

For more information about compression stockings, refer to our website and our page on jobst stockings.

Cheapest Car Insurance — You Need To Know These In Your Own Interest

May 10, 2009 by ftsgetexback · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Finance

A simple but effective way of lowering your premium is by authorizing an EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer). This authorizes your insurance provider to automatically withdraw your payments from your account at specified intervals. This saves the insurance company in many ways including removing the cost of sending payment notices and the cost associated with processing checks. Your premium is therefore reduced in line with the cheaper cost of giving you insurance.

Do your utmost to always drive responsibly. You’ll be making a wise resolution to always avoid being behind the wheels if you take alcohol.

Traffic offences that have to do with having more than the allowed amount of alcohol in your system invariably make you pay unbearable rates. Even little things like speeding tickets do add up to make you pay more expensive rates on the long run. So, if it’s breaking traffic laws, avoid it no matter how negligible it may appear to be at the time.

Under-25 drivers get really high rates. But for people who find themselves within this age range, getting good grades at school will help you enjoy more affordable rates.

To have this, however, you must maintain a minimum of a “B” grade. For those who make themselves eligible, you can get discounts of about 5%. This is so because insurers claim there is a connection between good grades and a young person’s behavior behind wheels. Young drivers with excellent grades are generally considered more responsible and less prone to recklessness behind wheels.

Certain cars are quite expensive to insure. It will help a lot if you ask your agent before choosing your next car. Avoid any car that has a high theft rate and/or a poor crash rating.

Another thing to take into consideration is the cost of maintaining a car as this is also an issue that determines your rate. Asking the right questions will help you avoid the “wrong” car and enjoy lower rates.

Do your best to always ensure your policy never lapses. It will make you pay high rates for a long time. It’s easy for this to happen to some people as they are switching to another insurer.

To avoid this, make sure that the new policy is fully in operational before you cancel the old. It looks simple but, take it or leave it, many individuals are paying a lot more simply because they made this mistake.

You can get lower rates on auto insurance today by visiting not less than five insurance quotes sites. Each quotes site will take you about 5 minutes or less to obtain quotes. (Some folks present information that are not really true about themselves. That isn’t wise since the quotes you’ll get this way won’t do you any good).

You’ll have to choose what represents the best auto insurance quote for you from the list of quotes you’ve obtained. It’s as simple as that. Nevertheless you could realize savings of hundreds of dollars.

Branson, Missouri Has It’s Story About The Cabin That Wouldn’t Die…

Way back when there was a minister who had preached in New York and Kansas when he revealed he has Tuberculosis. He was told if he went deep into the Ozark Mountains it would be good for his health.

In 1896 Harold Bell Wright took the train as far as he could and got off  at the end of the line at marionville, Mo. He proceeded on by horseback and in time got to the flood swollen White River. He followed it into the hills along the ridge near Mutton Hollow he met up with some homesteaders John and Anna Ross at their cabin.

He was invited to spend the night but we fell in love with them and the area and spent the whole summer. Not having anything important to
do he started writing a fiction story about the homestead and he gave the homesteaders the name of Old Matt and Aunt Mollie.

He returned to the cabin for eight years while his health slowly improved. In 1902 there was a terrible drought and all the streams shrunken as did the homesteaders livestock and the wildlife and it was a grueling time for all those living off the land.

In 1904 Mr. Wright kept writing all about the folks from the Ozark Mountain Country nonetheless he didn’t get his book published until 1907.The Missouri-Pacific Railroad completed the track of the White River Line through the Roark Valley in 1906. My wife and I took a ride on the Branson Scenic Railroad over those tracks and the railroad folks told us that those miles of track through these Ozark Mountains were the hardest and most high-priced miles on the whole railroad. They couldn’t climb over the mountain tops so they had to move along the sides and to do that they had to carve out a shelf in the mountain side to lay the track on. Canyons had to be either bridged or filled with rock and in a couple places where they couldn’t get over or around they had to tunnel by hand through solid rock with just hand tools, horses and dynamite.
